Memento mori.

I am really not the "still life" type of person... but this was an assignment I didn't want to skip.

XVI-XVII. century painters had this obsession to remind people of their mortality and of the ephemer nature of all pleasures in life. to this end, they created still lives with combinations of skulls, rotten fruits, scientific instruments, bubbles, mirrors, withered flowers and so on. the genre was called vanitas, originating from the biblical quote "vanitatum vanitas" (surprisingly standing for "vanity of vanities").

this is already the third version of my attempts: first I tried a "classical" set, but overcrammed it and the composition didn't really work. then I built a very artsy modern contraption with a blender and a coffee jug, but I think this re-shoot took me the closest to the thing I aimed for.

it is classical yet slightly twisted study with this new symbol of earthly (thus momentary) pleasures: the disco ball.

enjoy! and don't forget to remember death. ;)

__The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all art and science.

csudaszé;p ez! meg vicces is.

azt a fekete csikot ott alul nem értem... :)
excellent take, as a modern vanitas! nice use of the dental mirror as well.

I took a Dutch Golden Age art history course last semester and my final paper was on still life as self-portraiture, so naturally I researched a lot of vanitas!

it's a little sparse, but nice composition none-the-less!

strike my soul and make me dance.

this is really cool too see as a photo, as opposed to a painting.
the lighting is great, too.

looks like that precious gift from the smoky mirror has finally found the perfect place to be, or not to be.

Dean Learner: I had a cat once. I dropped a sofa on it, it was a write off, so I stood on its head.
